Blog 13: BMW Winter Preparation Guide: 10 Things You Should Check Before Winter
As temperatures begin to drop, winter can expose problems that may have gone unnoticed during the warmer months. From weak batteries and worn brakes to cooling system issues and poor visibility, a little preparation can help keep your BMW reliable throughout the colder months.
At BM Performance, we recommend checking these 10 key areas before winter.
1. Check Your BMW Battery
Cold temperatures put additional strain on your battery. If your BMW is slow to start, displays electrical warnings or has experienced a battery discharge message, it could be time for a BMW battery test or replacement.
2. Inspect Your Brakes
Wet and cold conditions make having brakes in good condition even more important. Check your brake pads, discs and brake fluid, particularly if you notice vibration, noise or reduced braking performance.
3. Check Your Tyres
Check your tyre pressures and tread depth regularly. Look for uneven wear or damage, and remember that correct tyre condition is particularly important on BMW xDrive models where maintaining the correct tyre specifications is essential.
4. Check Your Coolant & Antifreeze
Your BMW's cooling system needs to be in good condition throughout winter. Low coolant, leaks or incorrect antifreeze concentration can lead to serious engine problems when temperatures fall.
If you notice a coolant warning or regularly need to top up the coolant, don't ignore it. It could indicate an underlying cooling system fault.
5. Check Your Engine Oil
Cold starts place additional demands on your engine. Make sure your BMW is serviced at the correct intervals and that the correct specification of engine oil is being used. Manually check what service items are due on your vehicle - Menu > Vehicle Information > Vehicle Status > Service Requirements.
Regular servicing can also help identify developing problems before they become expensive repairs.

6. Check Your Windscreen Wipers & Washer Fluid
Poor visibility is a common winter problem. Replace worn wiper blades and use a winter-grade screenwash that provides protection against freezing temperatures.
Clear visibility is particularly important during dark, wet winter mornings and evenings.
7. Check Your Lights
Shorter days and poor weather mean you'll rely on your BMW's lights much more. Check your headlights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights and number plate lights to make sure everything is working correctly.
8. Don't Ignore BMW Warning Lights
If your BMW displays a warning light or message, don't simply reset it and hope it disappears.
Low battery voltage, sensor faults and other developing problems can trigger multiple BMW warning messages.
A professional BMW diagnostic scan can help identify the underlying cause and prevent a small problem from becoming a larger repair.
9. Check Your Heating & Demisting
Your heating system needs to be working correctly to keep the cabin comfortable and your windows clear.
Poor heating can sometimes indicate problems with the cooling system, thermostat or HVAC system, so don't ignore a BMW that isn't reaching the correct temperature or isn't producing sufficient heat.
10. Consider a Pre-Winter Inspection
If your BMW is due a service, or you've noticed unusual noises, warning lights or changes in performance, autumn is an ideal time to have it checked before winter arrives.
A BMW inspection or service before winter can identify potential problems before they leave you stranded in colder weather.
