BMW Diesel Engine Timing Chain Replacement (N47, N57, B47)
BMW does not specify a fixed replacement interval for timing chains.
That’s because, unlike timing belts, chains are designed to last the lifetime of the engine — in theory.
However, in reality, certain BMW engines are prone to premature wear or failure, meaning the chain may need replacement well before 100,000 miles. We often see timing chains needing replacement at 60,000 miles onwards.
We offer timing chain inspection and replacement services using OEM or upgraded components for most BMW petrol and diesel engines.
Our experienced technicians follow BMW’s exact procedures, ensuring your engine is timed perfectly and runs like new.
Our timing chain repair includes:
Genuine IWIS camshaft, fuel and oil pump chains.
4 timing chain guides, 2 timing chain tensioners.
Camshaft and pump sprockets.
Oil sprayer.
Crankshaft oil seal.
Injector seals.
Rocker cover gasket.
Associated gaskets & hardware.
Engine oil and filter.
Engine coolant.
Digital service history updated on bmw online database.
Full vehicle health check.
Common additions to this service are:
ZF transmission service, discounted from £400 to £300 when done with timing chain replacement.
Valve cover replacement, discounted to parts only price (no labour cost), typically £260-£400 depending upon the engine.
