Blog 11: BMW iDrive Stuck Constantly Restarting? Here's What Causes It and How to Fix It
If your BMW iDrive screen constantly restarts, gets stuck on the BMW logo, or repeatedly boots up every few seconds, you're certainly not alone. This is one of the most common infotainment faults we see across a wide range of BMW models, particularly F-Series vehicles equipped with CIC, NBT and NBT EVO head units.
The good news? In many cases, the issue can be repaired without replacing the entire iDrive system.
What Does an iDrive Boot Loop Look Like?
A boot loop is when the iDrive system never fully starts. Instead, you'll typically notice one or more of the following symptoms:
BMW logo appears before the screen goes black.
The display restarts every 10-60 seconds.
Navigation, Bluetooth and media stop working.
The reversing camera may not load correctly.
The screen occasionally works before restarting again.
The vehicle itself will usually continue to drive perfectly normally, but you'll lose access to many of the features controlled by the iDrive system.
Which BMW Models Are Affected?
We've seen this issue on numerous BMW models from 2007 onwards, including:
BMW 1 Series
BMW 2 Series
BMW 3 Series
BMW 4 Series
BMW 5 Series
BMW 6 Series
BMW X1, X3, X4 and X5
Various MINI models using the same head unit technology
While it can affect several generations of BMW infotainment systems, it is particularly common on NBT and NBT EVO units after years of heat cycling and everyday use.
What Causes the iDrive to Keep Restarting?
There isn't one single cause, but these are the most common faults.
1. Internal Head Unit Failure
Over time, electronic components are exposed to constant heat and vibration behind the dashboard. Eventually internal components begin to fail, causing the operating system to crash repeatedly during startup.
2. Corrupted Software
In most cases the software becomes corrupted.
In these cases, specialist programming or software recovery may restore the unit without replacing hardware. Some owners have even resolved the problem with a complete software update when caught early.
3. Failing Hard Drive (NBT Systems)
Many NBT systems store the operating software and navigation data on an internal hard drive.
As these drives age, read/write errors develop, preventing the operating system from loading correctly and causing continuous rebooting.
4. Low Battery Voltage
BMW electronics are extremely sensitive to voltage.
A weak battery or charging issue can occasionally trigger strange iDrive behaviour, including freezing or rebooting during startup. Before assuming the head unit has failed, it's always worth checking battery health.
Can You Fix It Yourself?
Before booking your BMW in, there are a few simple things worth trying:
Perform an iDrive reset by holding the volume/power button for around 30 seconds.
Disconnect any USB accessories.
Check the vehicle battery condition.
Install any available BMW software updates.
If the screen continues to restart every few seconds, these basic checks are unlikely to solve the problem permanently and professional diagnosis is recommended.
Does the Whole Head Unit Need Replacing?
Not always.
Many dealerships recommend replacing the complete head unit, which can often cost well over £1,000 once programming is included.
However, depending on the fault, specialist repair or software recovery can often restore the existing unit at a fraction of the replacement cost. The correct solution depends on whether the issue is software-related, an internal hardware failure, or another electrical fault. For further details see here
How We Diagnose the Problem
At BM Performance, we don't simply replace expensive parts.
Our diagnostic process includes:
Full vehicle fault code scan
Battery and charging system testing
iDrive software assessment
Head unit communication checks
Identification of hardware or software faults
This allows us to recommend the most cost-effective repair rather than replacing components unnecessarily.
