Blog 3: BMW Retrofits/Coding (Cruise Control, Paddle Shifters, Power Fold Mirrors & More)
Common BMW retrofits involve adding features, upgrades, or modern technology to BMW models that may not have been available when the car was originally manufactured or specified from factory. These retrofits often enhance the vehicle's convenience, safety, performance, and overall driving experience.
Common Retrofits
Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Retrofit
Adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration to older BMWs that didn't come with it.
Allows seamless smartphone integration with the iDrive system for navigation, music, and apps.
Reverse Camera & Parking Sensors
Installing a reverse camera and parking sensors to assist with parking and avoid obstacles.
Improves safety when reversing, making parking easier and safer.
Head-Up Display (HUD)
Retrofitting the car with a high-tech system that projects key driving information onto the windshield, such as speed, navigation, and safety alerts.
Reduces distractions by allowing the driver to keep their eyes on the road while still receiving important information.
Adaptive LED or Laser Headlights
Replacing halogen or xenon headlights with adaptive LED or even laser headlights for better night visibility and energy efficiency.
Better illumination, increased safety, and a more modern appearance.
Wireless Charging Pad
Installing a wireless charging pad in the center console to charge smartphones without the need for cables.
Convenient for charging modern smartphones without messy cables.
Heated Seats or Heated Steering Wheel
Adding heated seats or a heated steering wheel to a BMW model that didn’t come with these options.
Improved comfort in cold weather.
Digital Instrument Cluster (Live Cockpit)
Retrofitting the vehicle with a fully digital instrument cluster or Live Cockpit display, replacing traditional analog gauges.
More modern, customizable displays with the ability to show more information in a clearer, easier-to-read format.
Sport Seats or M Sport Seats
Upgrading to sportier or more aggressive M Sport-style seats that provide better support and a sportier look.
Improved comfort and support for performance driving, and a sportier interior aesthetic.
Enhanced Audio Systems (Harman Kardon)
Retrofitting the car with a premium audio system, such as Harman Kardon surround sound, to replace the base sound system.
Enhanced sound quality and a more immersive in-car audio experience.
Keyless Entry and Start (Comfort Access)
Retrofitting a keyless entry and push-button start system, so you can unlock and start your car without removing the key from your pocket or bag.
Convenience and added luxury feel, as well as easier entry/exit.
Cruise Control
Retrofitting the vehicle with active cruise control, which allows the car to maintain a set speed while also adjusting to traffic conditions, including stopping and starting in traffic.
Increases convenience on long drives and reduces driver fatigue in heavy traffic.
Power Folding Wing Mirrors
Power folding mirrors allow the side mirrors to automatically fold in when you lock the car (often via the key fob), or by interior button, which is particularly useful for parking in tight spaces or protecting the mirrors from damage.
How is it done?
Components
Wiring Harnesses (for electrical connections)
Parts & Control Modules (for features like power folding mirrors, adaptive headlights)
Switches/Buttons (for manual controls like heated seats, power fold wing mirrors)
Install the New Parts
Wiring and Modules: Run wiring for new components & connect to modules (mirrors, sensors, cameras).
Install Components: Fit new parts (e.g., power folding mirrors, new headlights, sensors).
Perform Coding/Programming
BMW ISTA or E-Sys: For advanced coding/programming to activate the retrofit feature.
BimmerCode: A simpler tool for basic coding and activation.
Test the Retrofit
Check that all features function as expected (e.g., mirrors fold, camera works, seat heaters activate).
Verify integration with iDrive (for features like CarPlay/Android Auto).
